Remaining on the same pattern samples of Diacono, an original design drawn in white ink on black paper was discovered at Casa Industriale Gozo. The catalogue described it as ‘an elegant border for ladies’ petticoat’. The pattern consists of foliage and flowers embedded on the English Stitch ground, enclosing as well medallions bearing the Maltese Cross. The fringe decorating the head-side forms an interesting and unusual border.
On the whole the design chosen presents quite a challenge to students as they get inspired when creating their own design for the individual project.

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to add to their knowledge acquired in previous lace studies which helps creating new projects. They will have enough knowledge to calculate measurements, choose the best thread found in the market, estimate the time of labour, and consequently put a price to their individual projects.
From a design which in the past was popular in use for ladies’ dress, students will be able to create a fashionable item for today’s use such as stoles, capes, hats, wedding dress etc. experimenting with colours and different textures.
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to go into more detail in the drawing and practice of previously learnt stitches. Students learn how to draw and work the ‘Palma Motif’, the ‘English Stitch’ ground adding to it a floral free-hand drawing. Most dominantly is drawing and working a ‘Fringe’ as a border for shawls, dress items or interior decorations.
Students also learn how to dissect a wide pattern by following a line of dissection which provides a concealed seam at the end.
